9:00 AM // VERITAS WORKSHOP
Discerning and comprehending truth requires effort and at times can be difficult to navigate on your own. Our Veritas Workshop is an on-going group in which all of the participants join together in the diligent and rewarding work of identifying and understanding truth. Topics and studies vary throughout the year and the group is offered for both in-person and online. Participants are free to join at any point.
Truth, science, faith, trust. These are sources of information and thought that we all embrace to a greater or lesser extent. Examined properly, each of them can be very beneficial. They are also domains which may be abused and perverted in many ways. Our culture currently has a great many divisions and these sources can, when properly used, lead us away from division. The class will examine a new book by Dr. Francis Collins (The Road to Wisdom: On Truth, Faith, Science and Trust) that is dedicated to helping us understand the best ways to use these four important tools. Dr. Collins is recently retired from serving as the Director of the National Institutes of Health. He was, previously, the Director of the Human Genome Project and was the founder of Biologos, an organization devoted to the integration of Christian faith and science. He was the author of The Language of God (2006) which, among other information, tells his personal testimony of coming to faith in Jesus.
9:00 AM // Room 14
Facilitated by David Buchanan & Noel Anderson
9:00 AM // Compassion & Conviction
What is the role of the Christian in society and in civic engagement? What does Scripture teach about our calling in the world? Often these questions are framed in impossible ways for the faithful Christian: we’re forced to choose between extreme positions. As a result, it’s easy for Christians to grow disillusioned with civic engagement. This has compromised the opportunity for Christian witness in the public square and divided the church.
The authors of Compassion & Conviction represent the AND Campaign, which exists to educate and organize Christians for faithful civic and cultural engagement. In simple, understandable language, the authors lay out the biblical case for civic engagement and help Christians navigate the complex world of politics with integrity, from political messaging and the politics of race to protests, advocacy, and more.
Previous attendees have found this class to be participatory and highly conversational. You are invited to sign up and join. You will find that it is possible to engage the political process with both compassion and conviction.
