9:00 AM // VERITAS WORKSHOP
Discerning and comprehending truth requires effort and at times can be difficult to navigate on your own. Our Veritas Workshop is an on-going group in which all of the participants join together in the diligent and rewarding work of identifying and understanding truth. Topics and studies vary throughout the year and the group is offered for both in-person and online. Participants are free to join at any point.
Truth, science, faith, trust. These are sources of information and thought that we all embrace to a greater or lesser extent. Examined properly, each of them can be very beneficial. They are also domains which may be abused and perverted in many ways. Our culture currently has a great many divisions and these sources can, when properly used, lead us away from division. The class will examine a new book by Dr. Francis Collins (The Road to Wisdom: On Truth, Faith, Science and Trust) that is dedicated to helping us understand the best ways to use these four important tools. Dr. Collins is recently retired from serving as the Director of the National Institutes of Health. He was, previously, the Director of the Human Genome Project and was the founder of Biologos, an organization devoted to the integration of Christian faith and science. He was the author of The Language of God (2006) which, among other information, tells his personal testimony of coming to faith in Jesus.
9:00 AM // Room 14
Facilitated by David Buchanan & Noel Anderson
9:00 AM (1/19 - 2/23) // Doubt: friend or foe?
Are you or somebody you know dealing with doubts about their faith? Is that always a bad thing? In this 5-week course we will explore the role of doubt in life of a disciple. Far from being a foe, if handled biblically doubts can lead to fuller and richer relationships in all aspects of our lives – cave, table, and road. Come let us explore and reclaim this God-given gift of doubt.
9:00 AM // Room 16
Facilitated by George & Lisa Yocum
9:00 am (1/19 - 3/23) // Practicing the way
Two thousand years ago, Jesus said to his disciples "follow me." But what does it mean for us to follow Jesus today? This course features sessions of teaching, guided conversations, and spiritual exercises designed to lay a foundation for lifelong apprenticeship to Jesus. Through the course, you'll form an understanding of intentional spiritual formation and explore how to follow Jesus in our busy, distracted, and increasingly secular culture. This class aims to help us to be with Jesus (Cave), become like Jesus (Table), and do as Jesus did (Road), as we seek to be transformed into people of love. Check out practicingtheway.org for more information.
9:00 AM // Room 13
Facilitated by Christian & Kaitlyn Thompson
9:00 am (3/9 - 5/18) // Out of the cave and hit the road
Have you ever wondered how to more accurately read and interpret the Bible, so that you could feel better prepared to discuss Biblical truths with others? If so, please consider this interactive series, in which we will explore ways to properly read and interpret the Scriptures and to confidently use our knowledge to skillfully present God's truths to people in our everyday lives. In this 8-week intergenerational class, we will view the video series "Never Read a Bible Verse" and "Tactics" from Stand to Reason (str.org). Each session will feature a brief video, followed by lively discussion, and ideas for applying the principles to our Cave and Road times. All interested youth and adults are invites. (Spoiler alert! Adults; many of the Youth have been studying these ideas for years. Come and be inspired and challenged by Salem's terrific young people).
